Conway welcomes Government’s decision to facilitate vital addiction support groups during Level 3

6th October 2020 - Senator Martin Conway

Fine Gael Health Spokesperson in Seanad Éireann, Senator Martin Conway, has today welcomed the Government’s decision to facilitate the return of in-person meetings for Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA) and other addiction peer support groups.

Senator Conway said: “I have been informed by Minister Frank Feighan; Minister of State with responsibility for Public Health, Well Being and National Drugs Strategy that he has secured approval from the Department of Health and NPHET that physical AA, NA and GA meetings and other similar organisations can continue during level 3 restrictions across the country.

“I know that Minister Feighan has worked closely with these organisations to ensure that all public health guidelines will be followed.

“These organisations are a lifeline to thousands of people who struggle with addiction on a daily basis and the decision to allow these meetings continue is most welcome.

“Minister Feighan has also provided clarity that meetings can be organised should County Clare or indeed any other county, progress to level 4 of the Living with Covid-19 Plan.”

Senator Conway concluded: “While the various support groups made valiant efforts during the strict lockdown arranging meetings online, this is not a substitute for face to face meetings.

“This Government is committed to supporting people struggling with addictions and their families.”
