Conway requests Justice Committee to recall acting Garda Commissioner

5th September 2014 - Aoife Carragher

Fine Gael Clare Senator and spokesperson on Justice, Equality and Disability Martin Conway, has today (Monday), written to the Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality requesting the committee, of which Senator Conway is a member of, recalls the interim Garda Commissioner to discuss the response of the force to the recent allegations of the improper termination of penalty points.

“In light of the serious allegations in weekend media reports regarding the alleged improper termination of penalty point notices, I feel it is now necessary for the Justice committee to further engage with the acting Garda Commissioner, Noirín O’Sullivan, on this issue.

“I have today written to the Chairman of the Justice Committee, of which I am a member, requesting that the interim Garda Commissioner be recalled for urgent engagement on the procedures and protocols that are in place for the termination of penalty point notices.

“A lot has happened over the last number of months and significant change has taken place at senior levels within the Department of Justice and An Garda Síochana.   I believe that in consideration of what has been reported it is necessary for the committee to invite the interim Commissioner before the committee to give a further update to us on this issue and provide the necessary reassurance to the committee that real reform is being implemented.”
