Consultation Seminar on Justice Reform marks new era of inclusivity and transparency

20th June 2014 - Aoife Carragher

Fine Gael Wicklow TD and Member of the Public Accounts Committee, Simon Harris, has today (Friday) welcomed the Consultation Seminar on Justice Reform hosted by Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald TD.

“Today’s Consultation Seminar on Justice Reform heralds a new, inclusive and consultative approach to policing where all stakeholders are invited to contribute and to be involved.

“This approach compares and contrasts starkly with the rejected legislation tabled by Shane Ross this week, which would have undermined future appointments to the position of Garda Commissioner by way of open competition and failed to recognise the new Garda Authority.

“The seminar hosted by the Minister for Justice is another example of the proactive approach that is needed in the reform of An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice.

“Key stakeholders are invited to contribute their thoughts to the Department of Justice and to influence a comprehensive programme of justice reform. Already significant steps have been taken, among these are the announcement of the creation of an Independent Garda Authority which will be established by the end of this year; a Commission of Investigation in line with recommendations made in the Guerin Report is in place; and new legislation will be introduced to strengthen the powers and remit of GSOC.

“Openness and transparency is essential as we work to create a policing and justice system that is trusted by the public. There is a significant body of work to be done in rebuilding public confidence and in ensuring that we support the Gardaí who do such important work. Events like the Consultation Seminar on Justice Reform are vital in opening the door to the people and allowing everyone to influence change.”
