Comiskey welcomes outcome of concluded deal on fish quotas for 2013

20th December 2012 - Senator Michael Comiskey

Fine Gael Sligo Leitrim Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Agriculture, Food and the Marine Michael Comiskey welcomed the outcome of discussions between European Union Fisheries Ministers concluded on a deal on fish quotas for 2013.

“Following tough negotiations and pressure from the European Commission to reduce the quota on 30 fish stocks associated with the Irish fleet, I commend Simon Coveney T.D. Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and his Department for reversing some of the demands for these cuts in quotas owing to the strong arguments put forward by Ireland based on scientific evidence.

“In particular a cut in the prawn quota of 12% was demanded, however, these negotiations have resulted in a 6% increase in that quota with the prawn industry already estimated to be worth €40 million this increase is significant.   Further proposed increases in the mackerel and blue whiting quota are expected to take effect but this will have to be finalised in January.

“While cuts to cod, haddock and sole quotas in the Irish Sea, were accepted, many of the cuts were significantly lower than first expected and may be temporary and necessary to allow stock levels to increase.

“The fishing sector is very important to both the domestic and export markets and Minister Coveney which employs a significant number of people and we must do our utmost to protect it.”
