Collins welcomes €1 million fund to help import much needed fodder

24th April 2013 - Aine Collins TD

Fine Gael Cork North West Deputy, Áine Collins, has welcomed the announcement by Minister Simon Coveney that he is going to make a fund of €1 million available to help reduce the price of imported fodder.

Collins said “In light of the difficulties experienced by farmers in sourcing fodder supplies today’s announcement by Minister Coveney will give much needed relief, especially to my constituency and in particular to the Dunhallow region

“Farmers are really in crisis and need this help immediately.   The extra cost of importing fodder is putting farmers under immense pressure, so offsetting the import costs is very welcome help.”

The scheme will operate through the Dairy co-operatives who are going out to source the fodder and will import it.   The cost of a large bale of hay is €75 and it is costing another €75 to bring it in.   The Co-ops have confirmed that they will facilitate farmers who need help in sourcing urgent fodder supplies, whether or not they are existing customers or suppliers.

“The co-op’s, and particularly Dairygold, have a vital role in this – they provide the quickest and most effective way of getting the fodder to those who need it.” said Collins.

“It is necessary that we all work together on this crisis and especially encourage farmers to seek the help and supports that are available.

“Under no circumstances should there be any cattle dying.    Farmers should contact their local Teagasc Office and speak with their DVO as there is also an animal welfare fund which was setup by the minister in December 2011”.

“I have been in contact with Senior Managers in both Allied Irish Bank and Bank of Ireland and have been assured that they will be flexible and sympathetic in dealing with farmers in accessing credit to buy fodder for their livestock.

“I am available to help any time on this issue so please do not hesitate to contact me.”
