Coffey meets with Residents of Blenheim Estate to discuss Septic Tanks Issues

4th March 2015 - Senator Paudie Coffey

Fine Gael Waterford Minister Paudie Coffey has today (Monday) met with residents of Blenheim Estate in Waterford City to discuss septic tank issues that are affecting homes in the area.

“Blenheim is an estate of 55 houses in Waterford City which was developed in 1970s. It is a suburban type estate but all of the houses have their own individual septic tanks. The estate itself is located in close proximity to the Islandview pumping station.

“This is situation that has been ignored for many years and is clear example of how investment in Water infrastructure is needed. There is considerable investment happening in Waterford for the upgrading of water systems across Waterford City and County.

“We have seen the seven village sewerage scheme which saw a €50 million investment in water treatment and quality across Waterford County. Water is a finite resource and it is critical that we ensure that we have clean, safe and secure water for this and future generations.

“In respect of Blenheim Estate, it has been suggested that a group sewerage scheme might provide a solution and in early 2014, the Council surveyed all of the residents with a large majority in favour.

“I will work with all of the stakeholders including the Blenheim residents, the council and the Department of Environment to have this matter resolved in the interests of environmental protection of ground waters and the resolution of sub-standard waste water treatment in the Blenheim Estate.”
