Cavan to be considered as prime location for housing development – O’Reilly

29th August 2014 - Aoife Carragher

Fine Gael TD for Cavan/Monaghan, Joe O’Reilly believes Cavan should be considered as a potential location for housing development and has been made representations to the Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Housing, Paudie Coffey TD on the issue.

“Cavan is a prime location for additional housing and is ready to absorb increased population. It is wonderful to be in this position but it is also crucial that Government and our Local Authority begin to capitalise on this.

“Speaking to people on the ground, over recent months it has become clear that there is an increased demand for houses to buy and to rent in Cavan. With this in mind I have made representations to the Minister for Housing promoting Cavan as a prime location for development.

“Huge investment has been made by the Government in Cavan, in particular in water and sewerage systems which are essential to construction. As this infrastructure is now in place, Cavan is ready for growth.

“€714,600 has been invested in Cavan Town sewerage and water systems, €600,000 in Bailieborough, €1.3 million in Mullagh and €1.2 million in Ballyjamesduff. It is a great tribute to Government that this investment has been made in County Cavan and we are also fortunate to have a very proactive and progressive County Council.

“Now that the investment is in place, it seems logical to me that Cavan should become a major centre of building to deal with the housing shortage in Dublin and commuter counties. There is excellent infrastructure in Cavan making us very accessible to Dublin.

“I believe that the Government should encourage renewed construction in County Cavan and I will work with my colleagues to explore the options to make this possible. We need to promote Cavan’s attributes, use existing planning permission within reason and incentivise building for those in the construction sector.”
