Cap on rent increases provides certainty to renters– Cummins

4th November 2021 - Senator John Cummins

The Government’s decision to cap rent increases at 2pc in rent pressure zones will give tenants further protections and security, Fine Gael Senator John Cummins has said.

Senator Cummins, Fine Gael Seanad Spokesperson on Housing, confirmed the new cap will operate when general inflation is higher than 2%.

“This decision further strengthens tenants’ rights and extends the rent controls which were initiated by Fine Gael in 2016. The continuation of the great work started by Fine Gael ensures renters will have clarity and certainty into the future.

“The decision to link rent increases to inflation was made on the basis that inflation averaged 0.73% per year over the previous 3 years. Due to the unexpected rise in inflation, it was clear measures needed to be taken to ensure renters were protected.

“Having stressed the importance of keeping this under review, I’m delighted this decision has been made. Fine Gael has a proven track record when it comes to protecting the rights of tenants.

“This Government has, and continues to put in place enhanced legislative protections for renters during the pandemic.

“We introduced targeted protections for renters with evictions bans in place during periods of restricted movement and protections for renters whose income has been impacted by the pandemic.

“The decision by Cabinet to further protect renters is welcomed,” Senator Cummins finished.
