Bus Éireann advertisement campaign promoting services to Dublin Airport should be removed – Byrne

27th August 2019 - Senator Maria Byrne

Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne has questioned the decision of Bus Éireann to carry out a public online advertisement campaign promoting its services to Dublin Airport, given Limerick’s proximity to Shannon Airport.

Senator Byrne said: “A large advertisement has been erected at Punches Cross and ads have appeared on Facebook advertising Bus Éireann’s daily services from Limerick to Dublin Airport. I find these actions from Bus Éireann absurd given the proximity of Shannon Airport to Limerick.

“This advertisement campaign is another nail in the coffin in Shannon Airports efforts to encourage holiday makers to fly from Shannon.

“Bus Éireann should immediately remove these advertisements and cease its online advertising campaign.

“There is a need for better state support and more joined up thinking in relation to Shannon Airport and I have raised this several times with the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross.

“In July I wrote to him requesting that considering Adare Manor’s successful Ryder Cup bid his Department should look at providing funding for the necessary infrastructure projects at Shannon Airport that would be permitted under EU State Aid rules.

“This would enable Shannon Airport to spend its financial resources on expanding routes/marketing campaigns instead of costly infrastructure projects.”
