Fine Gael in government secured the National Broadband Plan, which will rollout high-speed broadband to 1.1 million people mainly living in rural Ireland. The plan will ensure that every home, business, school, and farm in Ireland will have access to high-speed broadband — no matter where they are located.
This will be a game-changer to many. Super fast broadband speeds will make remote working a viable option into the future and will enable people to access a range of services online, including health and education based services.
Fine Gael signed the broadband contract to support rural Ireland and ensure that it was not left behind. No other party can say the same — in fact, many called for it to be scrapped.
On a rolling 18 month basis, NBI will regularly update the website to reflect the progress of the fibre rollout and provide indicative timelines on when connections will be available.
The Deployment Areas below include premises that are in the areas, plus surrounding townlands.
Surveying is the first step in delivering the new fibre network. During the surveying phase, National Broadband Ireland teams visit the local area, walk along the routes, take notes and measurements of existing infrastructure in the locality, such as telecom poles, cables and underground ducts. The NBI teams will also decide on the best way of providing the fibre broadband to each home, business, farm and school in the area that’s being surveyed.
The next phase is known as ‘Pre-Works’ which is when the physical construction starts. It involves building new duct routes, putting up new poles and trimming trees or other vegetation along the routes.
When the ‘Pre-Works’ have been carried out, the main construction works begin. At this stage, fibre is deployed overhead on the poles – similar to the old telephone wires – or in underground ducts. Once construction is completed, the new fibre cables are tested and, when all is in order, are commissioned and are now available for access by the householder/business.
The fibre broadband installed by National Broadband Ireland is provided to the customer by one of 16 (at present) telecom service providers.
In general, the process from surveying to pre-works to construction and connection can take between 15 and 18 months.
NBI continues to expand the surveying phase in advance of construction, which will have started in all counties by the end of the year.
