Brexit Customs Solution is the only way forward – Coghlan
17th May 2018 - Senator Paul Coghlan
Speaking in the Seanad today, Leas Chathaoirleach Senator Paul Coghlan said he believed that it is clear that the UK as whole remaining aligned to the Customs Union is the way to resolve the continuing dilemma over the UK’s future relationship with the EU.
Senator Coghlan said: “This matter is obviously under continuing discussion in Brussels between Michel Barnier’s team and David Davis’s team and hopefully they can find a suitable way forward through it.
“This full alignment with the rules of the internal market and customs union supporting north-south co-operation, the all island economy and the Good Friday agreement would be a most suitable resolution no matter what it might be called if it can be agreed.
“This would mean the UK as a whole staying realigned and not just Northern Ireland and would mean no customs checks either on our own border or on the Irish Sea.
“Such a solution should admirably suit all Irish interests and particularly those divergent in Northern Ireland.”
