Boost for Kells as town included in new Regional Aid Map – McEntee
25th April 2014 - Sarah Meade
Fine Gael Meath East TD, Helen McEntee, has today (Friday) welcomed the announcement from the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, that Kells is to be included in the list of areas which can receive Government support for businesses and investment under the Regional Aid Map.
“This is a very positive announcement for Kells, and I am confident that it will help to increase employment and business opportunities in the town. The Government, led by Minister Bruton and his officials, had to convince the European Commission (EC) to increase the number of areas included under the new Regional Aid Map, and as a result Kells is set to benefit.
“The Map details areas of the country in which the State can provide investment aid to businesses under EU rules. Minister Bruton has managed to secure a very strong deal for Ireland by getting an agreement to increase the number of areas which can receive State aid. Under the original proposals from the EC, the number of areas eligible for aid would have been reduced, and the level of aid would also be cut. Thankfully, Ireland has secured a much better deal.
“More than 60,000 new jobs were created in Ireland last year and initiatives such as this will ensure that employment growth is felt right across the country. Like many other rural towns, Kells was badly affected by the economic downturn. Things are improving in the town thanks to the resilience and determination of local businesses. The fact that Kells is now eligible for State aid will give the town a further boost.
“This is a real coup for small and medium businesses in Kells, which will now be eligible for State support. Typically, regional aid is given in the form of capital grants or employment grants. Regional aid is also provided under schemes for tourism grants, marine tourism, urban and rural renewal and other tax-based development schemes.
“The new Map is expected to take effect from 1st July 2014. Investment aid to large enterprises is permitted for new economic activities, expansions which involve new products or services, and also product innovation. Aid intensity rates (30% for small enterprises, 20% for medium-sized enterprises and 10% for large enterprises) are maintained at current levels.
“I would like to commend Minister Bruton for delivering for Kells and I hope businesses in the town will benefit considerably as a result.”
