Be wary of Sinn Féin’s bogus legal advice – Keane
23rd September 2014 - Fine Gael Press Office
Fine Gael Senator and Dublin South-West bye election candidate, Cáit Keane, has today (Tuesday) cautioned people to be wary of Sinn Féin’s bogus legal advice about water charges.
“I was most concerned to hear that Sinn Féin bye-election candidate, Cathal King, has been advising people to return their Irish Water pack unopened. He states that by avoiding signing the documents, people will not be entering into a contract with Irish Water for them to deliver a service. He says he is on strong ground and not worried about the courts. What kind of legal advice is this? This kind of quackery should not be heeded. Councillor King is not a lawyer and should not be encouraging people to take that risk.
“The fact is that the service of water is being delivered to him. And it does not come free. Unfortunately, due to decades of underinvestment in our water system, the current Government has had to do the responsible thing and introduce charges so that we, as a country, can fix our broken water system and ensure its sustainability in the future.
“Mary Lou McDonald has called water charges a deal breaker, saying Sinn Féin would reverse them if they were in Government. Luckily they are not, they have absolutely no plan to fill the hole in the public finances that would result from a reversal of water charges and indeed, the local property tax which they are also against. This is despite the fact that Sinn Féin preside over water charges and property tax in Government in Northern Ireland. Don’t they realise people are tired of a populist dishonest politics? Sinn Féin really will say anything for a few votes, including dispensing bogus legal advice.”
