At last, an Irish secondary school for south Dublin – Mitchell

6th March 2014 - Olivia Mitchell TD

Local Fine Gael TD for Dublin South, Olivia Mitchell has welcomed the announcement to locate a new Irish-medium secondary school, Gaelcholáiste an Phiarsaigh, at the former Loreto Abbey site.

“I am delighted that a permanent location has at last been found for Gaelcholáiste an Phiarsaigh and that the new school will open at Loreto Abbey, Grange Road from September 2014.

“I have been pursuing this issue with successive governments as a gaelcholáiste has been sought for many years to serve the growing number of pupils from the south Dublin primary level gaelscoileanna.  And indeed the number of gaelscoileanna has itself been increasing in the area in recent years.  This announcement will be well received by the 46 students and their parents registered to start in the school next September.

“The choice of the old Loreto Abbey not only provides an instant solution allowing pupils to immediately have access to a permanent building but it also provides an appropriate use for a site with a long educational tradition which might otherwise remain unused and ultimately derelict.  A location such as this will allow for the development of a modern school providing a range of facilities to the approximately 400 students that will ultimately attend the school. “
