Stop online lies with mandatory ID checks – Byrne

Limerick FG candidate calls for less anonymity and more accountability on social media sites

17th October 2024 - Senator Maria Byrne

Compulsory ID verification for all users of social media must be introduced, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator Maria Byrne emphasised that this measure is critical for tackling fake accounts, combating misinformation and ensuring user accountability, which will ultimately make online communities safer for everyone.

“The recent false accusation involving an individual in Wicklow—spread by a fake social media account linked to a far-right campaigner—shows just how dangerous these accounts can be.

“An innocent person was publicly accused of inappropriate behaviour, all based on lies from an account that was unverified. This is completely unacceptable, and it must be addressed.

“Introducing compulsory ID verification for all social media would help ensure that users are who they claim to be, and help save the gardaí time in investigating these claims.

“It would make it significantly harder for bad actors to hide behind fake profiles while spreading fear, misinformation, or harassment. We need stronger measures in place to stop people from weaponising anonymity to target others without consequence.

“This isn’t just about tackling malicious behaviour– it’s about enforcing standards and keeping people safe.

“Verification would also support the enforcement of digital age limits, ensuring that minors are protected and that platforms remain responsible. Parents need to know that the necessary steps are being taken to prevent harmful interactions online.

“Meaningful action must be taken to make social media safer, more accountable and far more transparent. Fake accounts should not have the power to destroy lives, spread hate, or incite fear.

“A compulsory ID verification system is a vital step forward in reclaiming social media as a space for genuine connection, where everyone is held accountable for their words and actions.” Senator Byrne concluded.
