Green light for A5 dual carriageway scheme great news for Donegal – Bradley
4th October 2024 - Nikki Bradley
One of Donegal’s most notoriously dangerous roads is finally to be made safe, thanks to cross-border Governments working together, a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Senator Nikki Bradley, Fine Gael General Election for Donegal has welcomed news today that work will begin on the A5, which links Donegal to Monaghan, next year.
“This is extremely positive news for the county of Donegal and all who work and live here and have cause to travel this treacherous route,” Senator Bradley said.
“Sadly, we know only too well the devastating effect this sub-standard route has had on families. Since the A5 upgrade was first mooted in 2007, more than 50 people have died while travelling on this road. That’s 50 families destroyed needlessly.
“The government pledged €600 million to fund the upgrade of the A5 Dublin to Derry route and has worked with the Stormont Executive to improve the safety and mobility on the island of Ireland. Not only will this infrastructure project improve lives and opportunities in the north west, it also demonstrated the Government’s belief in the benefits of collaborative investment in all-island infrastructure.
“This funding will not only benefit Donegal and Derry, but also the wider in area in terms of support for communities right across the north west and connectivity down to Dublin.
“What’s crucial now is that the works commence when planned and are carried out within the projected timelines. The people of Donegal have had to wait far too long for this and should not have to wait any longer.”
