Narrow Water Bridge construction a key Fine Gael commitment – O’Dowd
18th November 2022 - Fergus O'Dowd TD
The construction of the Narrow Water Bridge spanning counties Louth and Down will be the realisation of a long term Fine Gael commitment, Deputy Fergus O’Dowd has said.
The construction of the 280m long bridge in the North-East is being put out to tender and work is expected to begin next year.
Speaking on the eve of the 81st Fine Gael Ard Fheis, Deputy O’Dowd said it was good to see the Taoiseach implementing a key Fine Gael policy.
The Louth TD, who also serves as Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, said, “This key project was contained within Fine Gael’s 2020 General Election Manifesto.
“Last year, €3m was allocated to start work on the Narrow Water Bridge which will link Omeath in Louth with Warrenpoint in County Down. I’m delighted to see this Government is stepping up to deliver on our commitment. Others promise, but Fine Gael delivers.
“Connectivity is key to bringing communities together and we are already seeing the benefits of other cross border projects providing a significant spin off to the local economies. Everyone can benefit from co-operation across all sectors.
“Cross border tourism and trade will also greatly benefit when the bridge opens in the coming years. I eagerly look forward to that day,” Deputy O’Dowd said.
