Travelling this weekend? Pack your EHIC card – Richmond
28th July 2022 - Neale Richmond, TD
Ahead of a busy weekend for international travel, a Fine Gael TD is urging anyone heading abroad to make sure they have their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
Neale Richmond, the party’s Spokesperson on European Affairs said that up to a third of Irish people haven’t applied for their EHIC.
Deputy Richmond said, “This is a big weekend for travel with thousands of Irish people due to set off to the continent on holiday or to visit friends and family.
“One of the great benefits of being part of the EU is that Irish people can avail of free or greatly subsidised public healthcare should they need it.
“Formally known as the E1-11, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) lets you access healthcare in another EU or European Economic Area (EEA) State for free, or at a reduced cost. It covers you if you are on holiday, or on a short-term stay.
“Previous research I carried out when I was a Senator, showed that up to a third of Irish people didn’t have an EHIC and no doubt the impact of Covid-19 will have meant many more simply haven’t applied.
“You can apply or renew an EHIC through the HSE website in minutes so whether travelling to Ibiza or Ios, Paris or Berlin; I am urging anyone travelling not to leave home without their EHIC.”
