Condolences on the death of Mary Jackman, former Senator and Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council – O’Donnell

31st May 2022 - Kieran O'Donnell, TD

Deputy Kieran O’Donnell has expressed his condolences on the death of Mary Jackman, saying, “I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to Mary’s husband Nick, her daughter Nicola, sister Ursula and extended family on the very sad passing of our colleague and friend, former Senator, Councillor and Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, Mary Jackman.

“First elected as a member of Limerick County Council representing the Castleconnell electoral area in 1985, Mary went on to be a poll-topper over many elections until her retirement in 2014. She had the unique distinction of being the first female Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council in 1999.

“Mary was elected to Seanad Éireann for two terms where she represented the people of Limerick with great ability and commitment.

“Mary was a real lady and loved by all. She was a particularly friendly, warm, and engaging person and a dedicated public representative, with a very impressive political record spanning over four decades. She was highly respected both locally and nationally, within her own Fine Gael party, as well as across the political spectrum.

“We served together as councillors for the Castleconnell electoral area, and I witnessed first-hand Mary’s supreme skills as a politician and her ability to interact with people, gaining their trust and finding solutions. Extremely hard-working, Mary had a deep understanding and knowledge of politics and commitment to public service. I wish to acknowledge the great support and wise counsel Mary provided to me personally over many years.

“Mary’s legacy will be one of consistently delivering to the highest standards for the people she represented for 30 years. She continued to be very active in her community in Castletroy after retirement from politics.

“Mary will be greatly missed by everyone, but my thoughts today are with her family for whom this is a very deep personal loss.
