Human trafficking must be prevented in Ireland – Ward
2nd July 2021 - Senator Barry Ward
The publication of the US State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report reminds us we must redouble our efforts to stamp out human trafficking, Fine Gael Senator Barry Ward has said.
“Probably the most authoritative assessment of the state of human trafficking across the world, the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report ranks Ireland as one of the two weakest EU states in terms of tackling human trafficking.
“It says that Ireland is not meeting minimum international standards on combating human trafficking, creating a culture of ‘impunity for traffickers’,” Senator Ward said.
“While we have made advancements, Ireland must address these criticisms. As an island nation, we cannot be seen as an easy destination for people traffickers, but be a bulwark against this most pervasive criminal activity.
“The Smuggling of Persons Bill 2020 is now more urgent than ever, but until its enactment, An Garda Síochána and other enforcement stakeholders must ensure we are taking action to protect against human trafficking here.
“And the good work we have accompolihsed over the past year must be built upon.
“This includes, the drafting of a new National Action Plan on Human Trafficking; the development of training, through NGOs, which specifically targets front line staff in industries such as hospitality, airline and shipping which may come into contact with trafficked persons and the work being undertaken to provide dedicated accommodation for female victims of sexual exploitation,” Senator Ward said.
