Climate Action Bill a significant step in our fight against climate change – Farrell

Dublin Fingal TD and Fine Gael Spokesperson for Climate Action, Alan Farrell, has welcomed the publication of the Government’s Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill.

Deputy Farrell said, “Climate change is the biggest challenge we face as a global society and we’re running out of time to avoid the worst consequences. The Government’s new climate action legislation is a positive step that will set Ireland on course for carbon neutrality by 2050.

“The Bill builds on the progressive action Ireland has taken in recent years, notably including the Climate Action Plan published by the Fine Gael led Government in 2019.”

Deputy Farrell continued, “Just as climate change effects all sectors of society, we must all contribute to the national changes needed to help us reach our goals. No one sector will be able to carry this burden for the others; we need a whole of society approach.

“The Bill will also strengthen the role of the Climate Change Advisory Council, enabling it to propose appropriate carbon budgets to government. This will help us reduce our overall impact on the environment and the lasting impact we leave on the climate.”

Deputy Farrell added, “Climate change fundamentally threatens the future habitability of large swathes of the earth. If left unchecked, it will undoubtedly continue to cause conflict, famine and suffering on a global scale. We do, however, have an opportunity to avoid much of the worst ramifications. By acting now, we can turn the tide on this issue.

“I believe that Ireland can, and should, aim to become a global leader in the fight against climate change. A fight that will determine the future of our species.”
