New Armed Support Unit for Cavan- Monaghan will make a real difference to local policing – O’Reilly

30th September 2019 - Senator Joe O'Reilly

A new Garda Armed Support Unit deployed in Cavan-Monaghan from today for the border region will make a real difference to local policing, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator Joe O’Reilly said:

“This additional unit will complement existing resources deployed in the area and will make a positive contribution to the policing of the border region.

“I welcome Garda Commissioner Drew Harris’ commitment to ensuring that the area is properly resourced.

“The unit, which is to be based in Co Cavan, will work alongside existing units in Dundalk, Co Louth and in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal.

“We have seen in recent weeks with the horrific attack on Kevin Lunney that policing in the region is complex and requires significant cross-border co-operation.

“The addition of 20 officers is welcome and I would urged the Commissioner to continue to keep the needs of the border region under constant review,” he added.
