Richmond urges all mobile phone operators to follow Brexit example of Three

3rd April 2019 - Neale Richmond, TD

Fine Gael Senator and Chairman of the Seanad’s Brexit Committee, Neale Richmond, has urged all mobile phone operators to follow the example of Three Ireland, who have today (Wednesday) committed to maintaining the current roaming arrangements in the UK after Brexit.

“One of the key achievements of the European Union over the past number of years has been the effective abolition of roaming in the EU. Many people have been rightly concerned that Brexit will bring about the return of roaming for Irish people travelling to the UK. People living in border counties were also concerned about accidentally incurring roaming charges as they regularly traverse the seamless border or jump in and out of different mobile phone networks.

“The announcement by Three Ireland and their sister company Three UK that they will maintain the current roaming arrangements post Brexit is very welcome indeed, and should ease these valid concerns. I commend them for being the first mobile phone operator to provide these assurances for their customers across Ireland.

“I am now urging all mobile phone operators to follow the lead of Three Ireland and guarantee that the existing arrangements will continue regardless of what happens with Brexit in the coming days and weeks.

“Brexit will pose monumental difficulties for all Irish businesses regardless of what form it takes. Government and industry must make every effort to try and alleviate these difficulties.

“The Government has led the way on this by ensuring that Ireland is prepared as it can be in legislative terms. It is vital now that all businesses log onto www.gov.ie.brexit and take the necessary measures to prepare for Brexit in whatever form it occurs.”
