Statement from the Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys on the death of former TD Seymour Crawford

21st October 2018 - Heather Humphreys TD

The Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD, has today expressed her sadness at the death of former Fine Gael TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Seymour Crawford.

“It was with great sadness that I learned last night of the passing of Seymour Crawford.

“Seymour was an extremely hardworking TD and he served the people of Cavan-Monaghan with great distinction in Dail Eireann from 1992 up until his retirement in 2011. Seymour also served on Monaghan County Council from 1991 to 2003.

“Anybody who knew Seymour will know that he was a gentle giant. He was extremely good natured and he would always go above and beyond in his efforts to help his constituents.

“I will always be extremely grateful to Seymour for introducing me to politics when I was co-opted on to Monaghan County Council in his place following the end of the dual mandate in 2003.

“Seymour was not just a mentor but a very close friend. While he retired from national politics in 2011, Seymour was always on hand with sound advice whenever it was needed.

“Politics and helping people was Seymour’s passion. He loved nothing more than meeting people and even after his retirement, he would continue his house calls to old friends where he loved nothing more than recounting past political battles.

“Today is a very sad day for the Fine Gael Party in Cavan-Monaghan and in particular for the many people who worked so hard with Seymour down through the years during his various campaigns. Seymour never lost an election and that is perhaps the greatest compliment any politician can receive.

“I want to extend my sincere sympathy to Seymour’s family and friends and in particular his nephews, Andrew and Alister and niece Kirsten.”
