Nightlink bus service needed in Cork on busy weekends- Buttimer
5th August 2018 - Jerry Buttimer TD
Fine Gael Senator and Leader of Seanad Éireann, Jerry Buttimer, has called for a Nightlink bus service in Cork on busy weekends.
Senator Buttimer said such a service, similar to the one used in Dublin, would make Cork more accessible and open at night.
He said the upcoming Jazz Festival would be an ideal time to trial the initiative.
Senator Buttimer said: “Many people whom I have spoken to have raised the issue with me of trying to get home after a night out.
“This initiative of extending the bus services would increase accessibility and would be major boost to Cork’s night time economy.
“This service has been in existence in Dublin to great effect, and to trial this in Cork for the Jazz Festival would be a major step forward.
“These buses could run from the Grand Parade or the South Mall to orbital towns and population centres such as Glanmire, Douglas, Rochestown, Carrigaline and Passage West.
“The idea behind this would be to make the city more accessible at night.
“If this was trialled during the Jazz Weekend and was a success there would be no reason for a Nightlink service not to be rolled out for all the Bank Holidays and other landmark festivals in Cork.
“Cork is well known for its culture and nightlife, and I believe that this service would allow even more people to enjoy what Cork City has to offer”.
