Cannon congratulates Boston mayor with Galway roots
9th November 2017 - Ciaran Cannon TD
Minister for the Diaspora and International Development, Ciaran Cannon, has congratulated Boston’s Marty Walsh on his election to a second term as Mayor.
Minister Cannon said: “I am delighted that Marty Walsh has been re-elected as Mayor of Boston and extend to him my sincerest congratulations and good wishes for his second term of office.
“Mayor Walsh, the son of Irish emigrants from Connemara, has never forgotten his Galway roots and has been involved in several campaigns here, including for the new road to Screebe and the retention of the Carna bus service.
“He is also an ambassador for the Emigrants and Diaspora Centre Project in Carna and a welcome visitor on his trips to Ireland.
“According to the US Census Bureau, in the Boston metropolitan area, 22.8 percent of the population said they were of Irish descent — the highest percentage of the top 50 most populous US cities, surpassing other notable areas of Irish heritage like Chicago, New York and Philadelphia, according to a 2014 survey.
“The Irish abroad have been an exemplar of how to give service to host nations in every field of endeavour and Mayor Walsh is building on that tradition.
“I am delighted that he has said that he will again visit Galway next summer.”
