Sinn Féin should take its seats in the House of Commons- Burke
24th January 2017 - Colm Burke TD
Fine Gael Senator Colm Burke, has said that Sinn Féin should take its seats in the UK House of Commons in the wake of today’s decision of the UK Supreme Court, confirming the right of the British Parliament to control the Brexit process.
“The decision by the UK Supreme Court today (Tuesday) confirms the right of the UK Parliament to control the Brexit process. The Parliament will also decide on the final deal.
“The Supreme Court also stated that the British Government is not obliged to consult the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
“Sinn Féin says it wants to keep Northern Ireland in the European Union. The time is now right for the party to back talk with action.
“I believe Sinn Féin should abandon its abstentionist policy and take its four seats in the House of Commons. Let’s not forget, the Conservative Government in the UK only has a narrow majority, and so four votes could be crucial at various stages of the Brexit process.
“Sinn Féin should stop sitting on the sidelines and fight this fight where it counts- in the House of Commons”.
