O’Dowd highlights unique position of border counties at All-Island Civic Dialogue on Brexit

2nd November 2016 - Fergus O'Dowd TD

Fine Gael TD for Louth, Fergus O’Dowd, is standing up for border counties at the All-Island Civic Dialogue on Brexit. Deputy O’Dowd is attending today’s event at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham Dublin, in his role as Chair of the North-South Stream of the Fine Gael Working Group on Brexit.

“It is hugely important that the unique position of the Border counties is highlighted at the All-Island Civic Dialogue on Brexit today. I will be voicing the concerns of people and businesses in my own county of Louth and right across the Border, in relation to the impact of Brexit.

“The All-Island Civic Dialogue is a hugely important part of the Government’s preparations to meet the broad range of all-island challenges posed by Brexit. It is a great opportunity to hear directly from people from all parts of the Island, representing a broad range of civic society groups, trade unions, business groups, non-governmental organisations and representatives from political parties. This input from those most affected by Brexit will help to inform the Government’s position on the negotiation process. The outcome from the dialogue will also inform the next phase of the Government’s consultation process with wider society.

“In my role as Chair of the North-South Stream of the Fine Gael Working Group on Brexit, I will be engaging with political parties and relevant interest groups in Northern Ireland, as well as with key stakeholders in the border counties. I will also be promoting awareness of issues surrounding Brexit among Members of the European Parliament.

“In all negotiations, Fine Gael will ensure that the best possible outcomes will be achieved for our citizens, for the economy, for Northern Ireland and for the Common Travel Area.”
