Farrell calls on FF to stop using Cyprus situation to frighten Irish savers

20th March 2013 - Alan Farrell TD

Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, Alan Farrell, has today (Wednesday) called on Fianna Fáil to stop using the situation in Cyprus to try to instil fear in Irish bank depositors.
“As Minister Coveney clearly stated, under no circumstances will the Government target deposits in Irish banks. Michael McGrath TD, Fianna Fail’s Finance spokesperson, knows full well that deposits will not be targeted but is trying to raise fears among the public about their savings, which he knows to be groundless.
“It is galling to see Fianna Fáil try and create uncertainty among Irish savers. We should not forget that people in this country are facing economic hardship as a result of Fianna Fáil’s disastrous economic policies. The last thing we need is to have Fianna Fáil create doubt about the security of people’s savings.
“This is just another cynical attempt by Fianna Fáil to instil fear in the public for their own political gain. They were at it last week following the announcement of the mortgage arrears plan, disingenuously suggesting that this was going to lead to a massive hike in repossessions.
“Given the mess that they made of the country, it’s unedifying to see Fianna Fáil engaging in this type of groundless scaremongering. Unfortunately this is what we’ve come to expect.
“So much for Fianna Fáil’s promises of providing constructive opposition in the interests of the country. They have clearly reverted to the old Haughey approach of opposing anything for their own gain.”
