Coffey welcomes €780,000 worth of funding for Island View Overflow upgrade

Fine Gael Waterford Deputy, Paudie Coffey, has welcomed news that €780,000 in funding has been approved by Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, for the Waterford City Sewerage Scheme Phase II (Island View Overflow Upgrade). This is being financed by the Department’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2013.

“This is very positive news and will see the replacement of infrastructure including a new combined sewer overflow chamber, screens, overflow sewers, connections and outfall to deal with increased storm water at the existing Island View Pumping Station.

“This funding will see an improvement in water quality in the area and will ensure that compliance for environmental standards is reached. The approval of these monies reflects the need to deliver replacement infrastructure to combat the significant storm water flows to the existing network in the Island View Area.

“This is a substantial amount of funding given these economic times and once again shows that this Government has not forgotten about Waterford. An improved water infrastructure will help our competitiveness as a city and make us a more appealing place to invest in.

“This scheme is extremely important and I am urging Waterford City Council to complete contract formalities with the successful tenderer immediately so that construction of this scheme can start as soon as possible.”
