Coffey welcomes €6.5 million of funding for upgrading of Water Infrastructure in Waterford City

Fine Gael Waterford Deputy Paudie Coffey has received confirmation from Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan TD that €6.5 million worth of funding has been approved for the upgrading of water infrastructure in Waterford City. Deputy Coffey has worked with Minister Hogan on this matter for the last number of months and is pleased that the Minister has given the go-ahead for these improvement works.

“This funding will allow for the replacement of 28KM of existing cast iron, asbestos cement and uPVC water mains in Waterford City. These works will mean that the high level of water leakage from the current system will reduce significantly; thus improving water conservation and it will also lead to a better quality of water in people’s homes in Waterford City.

“This is a huge investment in Waterford City and the project will also include the repair in sewers and manholes in the City to further improve the quality of water in the City. This project follows on from the €50 million investment that has been made in the improvement of water infrastructure in Waterford County in the ‘7 Village Sewerage Scheme’ and underpins the government’s commitment to modernising Waterford’s infrastructure in areas that were neglected for far too long during the Celtic Tiger period.

“When these works are complete Waterford City will have a reliable quality water supply network and a modern sewerage network infrastructure; that will match the current demand and for additional demand into the future. I hope that Waterford City Council will now move to complete contract formalities so that these works can begin as soon as possible.”
