Beef exports continue to soar

26th July 2013 - Senator Michael Comiskey

Fine Gael Sligo/Leitrim Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Agriculture, Michael Comiskey, today (Friday) expressed satisfaction at rises in food and drink export figures released by An Bord Bia, showing a 9% increase valued at €370 million. The beef sector performed particularly well, growing by €140m (15%).

“This is a tremendous achievement for the beef sector, against a backdrop of continued global economic uncertainty and a measure of negative sentiment created by the pan-European instances of food fraud.

“The on-going competiveness and flexibility of the sector has ensured strong demand for Irish beef and dairy. Prime Irish cattle are achieving higher than average EU prices, with consumer loyalty for meat from Bord Bia Quality Assurance Schemes growing.

“The UK remains our single biggest destination for exports, but significant inroads have been made into new markets, particularly Asia, Africa and North America in recent years, providing greater opportunities for producers and adding an additional €200 million in export revenues.

“The recent decision by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), comprising United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, to lift their ban on the importation of Irish beef and lamb creates further potential.

“Irish food and drink producers face formidable competition in all categories but their ability to continually win market share through product excellence is a credit to Irish producers. Increasing numbers of consumers worldwide are voting with their pockets and choosing quality Irish products.”
