New DNA database another tool for Gardaí to tackle crime – O’Reilly

Fine Gael TD for Cavan/Monaghan, Joe O’Reilly, has said that the new state-of-the-art DNA Database System, which will come into operation on 20th November 2015, is another important tool that Gardaí can use to tackle crime.
“The new DNA database, which will be based in the Phoenix Park, will offer Gardaí the most modern technology available in the fight against crime. This high quality intelligence tool will be especially invaluable in the fight against ‘volume crime’, such as burglary and theft, and also in the investigation of serious offences against the person.
“Garda figures show that 75% of burglaries are committed by 25% of burglars, so DNA analysis can play a very important role in policing these types of crime. The new system will help the Gardaí to close the net on these serial offenders.
“The database will also assist in finding and identifying missing or unknown persons. This will provide significant assistance and reassurance for families in these situations.
“The launch of the new DNA database follows the recent publication of legislation to tackle repeat home burglars and the launch of Operation Thor.
“Operation Thor is aimed at tackling burglars, organised crime gangs and prolific offenders as well as working with communities to prevent crime. Over €5 million is being committed to support this anti-burglary plan.

“Minister Fitzgerald has also published the Criminal Justice (Burglary of Dwellings) Bill, which will mean tougher sentences for repeat burglars. The Bill will also allow courts to refuse ball for offenders who have a previous conviction helping to keep repeat burglars off the streets.
“The new DNA database is part of Fine Gael’s response to crime, as it strengthens the law to crackdown on serious and repeat offenders.”
