Don’t be fooled – Fianna Fail cannot be trusted on older people – Minister Donohoe
13th February 2016 - Paschal Donohoe TD
Fine Gael General Election candidate for Dublin Central TD and Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe has today (Saturday) warned older people not to be fooled by Fianna Fáil’s empty promises, saying that Fianna Fáil promised to increase the State pension to €300 in 2007, but instead they wrecked the economy.
“Fianna Fáil has no credibility on protecting and supporting older people. The Party went into the 2007 General Election promising to increase the State pension to €300. Instead, they got back into Government, wrecked the economy and imposed extremely harsh cuts on older people. Fianna Fáil cut the blind pension, the widow’s pension and the carer’s allowance – two times over.
“Fianna Fáil has abandoned older people in the past, and they will abandon them again. Fine Gael is the only party with a Long Term Economic Plan to keep the recovery going, which will create the resources needed to invest in better services for our older people. Fine Gael is committed to increasing the State pension by €25 over the next five years. We will also increase the number of home help hours and increase care in the community so older people can continue to live in their own homes.
“Fine Gael will continue to make sustainable and responsible decisions to improve the lives of older people. Fianna Fáil will continue to make empty promises which it cannot deliver because it has no plan and no credibility.”
