It’s time to implement the EU Victims’ Right Directive – Hayes
16th November 2015 - Brian Hayes MEP
Dublin Fine Gael MEP, Brian Hayes today (Monday) said that the enactment of the EU Victims’ Right Directive must be a priority for the Government. MEP Hayes made his comments while speaking at a conference organised by the Victims’ Right Alliance in Dublin’s Mansion House.
“EU Member States were expected to have transposed the requirements of the Directive into national law by today (16th November). These requirements include informing victims on the progression of criminal cases, the right to know when an offender is released from prison as well as the provision of support services.
“I fully support the implementation of the Directive. However, it is important that the right balance is struck between implementing the Directive and ensuring the constitutional rights of an alleged offender is not compromised.
“While introducing the legislation is one thing, ensuring its implementation in practical terms must be a priority. This includes ensuring that members of An Garda Siochana are adequately resourced and trained as well as providing necessary supports to the Office of the DPP and the Courts service.
I have spoken with the Minister for Justice, Francis Fitzgerald TD and she is absolutely committed to have this Directive implemented as soon as possible. I understand the necessary legislation will be published within the next 2 weeks. I call on all political parties in the Dail to make this matter a priority when the legislation comes before the house “concluded MEP Hayes.
