Students in direct provision must be given access to third level – Conway
14th August 2015 - Senator Martin Conway
Fine Gael Clare Senator, Martin Conway, has said today (Friday) that it’s essential for students in direct provision to have access to third level education and be provided with support.
“The achievement of the young Ukrainian student Anna Kern, who got 575 points in her Leaving Cert, is truly commendable and inspiring. We must now ensure that Anna and students like her can achieve their full potential and be allowed to further their education.
“I welcome confirmation today from the Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan that a new scheme is to be introduced for the 2015/16 academic year.
“The scheme will enable students in the direct provision system, who have spent five years or more in the Irish school system, to apply for student support. It is expected that the scheme will be published next week and that SUSI can accept applications approximately ten days after that.
“This is a very positive development as we must ensure that every student who completes their education here will be afforded the same opportunities.
“I’m glad to hear that the Minister for Education has said she’ll give Anna Kern every assistance she can. I would like to heartily congratulate Anna on her fantastic achievement and wish her all the very best as she enters third level education.”
