Local property tax review to take price rises into account – Doherty

Fine Gael TD for Meath East, Regina Doherty said today (Wednesday) the Government is reviewing the impacts of property price rises on the local property tax.

“The Minister for Finance is committed to examining the impact of property price movements on the local property tax.  A review of the system conducted by Dr Don Thornhill is ongoing. Its purpose is to make recommendations on changes that might be made to the system to ensure stability for homeowners.

“In parts of the country, including Co. Meath property values have increased significantly. However it is important to remember that the current rates are in effect until 2017. After that I am confident that no excessive burden will arise for homeowners when the recommendations of the review are implemented.

“Minister Noonan has given a firm commitment to examining any impacts on property tax liabilities due to increasing property prices. The review will be completed next month.”
