Joint venture companies selected to construct new Mullingar Courthouse – McFadden

Fine Gael TD for Longford/Westmeath, Gabrielle McFadden, has welcomed the news that the major refurbishment and extension works planned at Mullingar Courthouse took a step nearer today following the announcement by the Justice Minister, Frances Fitzgerald, that two joint venture companies have been identified to deliver the project.

“I have been informed today by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald, that the global BAM group, which has an Irish base, and Dutch company PGGM, will be together responsible for this project and six other courthouse projects around the country as part of a Public Private Partnership bundle.

“I am delighted with the news that this preferred tenderer has been identified to undertake this important project in Mullingar and building work will begin by the end of the year. The refurbishment and extension of the existing historic courthouse will accommodate three courtrooms, improved custody facilities, court offices and associated facilities.          

 “I have been in regular contact with the Courts Service regarding the progression of this project and I’m also pleased to learn that that the proposed alternative venue during the construction phase will be in Mullingar as it is important to keep services local.

 “This is excellent news for the town. We will have a fine new courthouse in a prominent location. There will also be a dividend in terms of jobs being created during the construction phase.

“This is a clear sign of the priority this Government places in our courts system which plays an important role in ensuring law and order in our country. Users of the court will now be able to avail of modern and comfortable facilities. The new courthouse will ensure that facilities will comply with modern standards for court accommodation. I would also like to thank Minister Fitzgerald, the Courts Service and the Office of the Public Works for helping to bring the project to this stage.”
