Funding for the non-Gaeltacht islands confirmed for the remainder of 2015 – Harrington
21st January 2015 - Fine Gael Press Office
Fine Gael Cork South West TD, Noel Harrington, has today (Wednesday) welcomed the news that funding for the Development Offices on non-Gaeltacht islands is confirmed for the remainder of 2015, while a longer term plan is worked out.
“The Minister for the Gaeltacht, Joe McHugh, has informed me that funding for the non-Gaeltacht islands is secure for the remainder of 2015.
“An important meeting took place on this matter between Minister McHugh and his colleague at the Department of Environment and Local Government, Minister Ann Phelan.
“The two Departments are currently examining options to support the non-Gaeltacht islands in the mid to long term. With this in mind the funding for 2015 has been secured in order to allow the time and space needed to work on the longer term plan.
“I was particularly pleased to note the comments by Minister McHugh that island representatives will be consulted as part of this planning process. It is vital that we hear the voices of those who most depend on the Development Offices served by this funding.
“Having brought Minister McHugh to visit both Sherkin and Bere Islands, I know he has a real understanding of the challenges faced by island communities. He was left in no doubt as to the need for the island community development offices.
“I will continue to work with Minister McHugh to ensure that island communities are protected and that a secure plan is put in place for their future.”
