Accountability in the Garda Síochána strengthened by new legislation – Conway

Fine Gael Senator for Clare and Seanad Spokesperson on Justice, Martin Conway, has said the passage of the Garda Síochána (Amendment) (No. 3) Bill 2014 through the Dáil and the Seanad provides a welcome opportunity for the reform of An Garda Síochána.

“This is a very important piece of legislation which will enhance the powers of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) in criminal investigations and will enable GSOC to carry out its functions with greater capacity and autonomy. It also serves to further embed the key principle of accountability in the Garda Síochána.

“The Government is committed to reform of the force and is committed to achieving a fully transparent police service.   This legislation is an important step in rebuilding public confidence in the force through increasing and expanding the remit and powers of GSOC.

“A fully functioning policing service needs world class supports and procedures. There is a lot to be done but this Government will deliver.”
