22nd June 2015 - Aoife Carragher
Minister for the Diaspora and TD for Kerry, Jimmy Deenihan, has welcomed the confirmation from the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, that €45,000 is to be allocated towards the conservation of Tomas O’Criomhthain’s house on Great Blasket Island.
“For some time I have been consulting with the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, as well as the OPW to secure funding for the conservation of Tomas O’Criomhthain’s house on Great Blasket Island. I am therefore very pleased that the OPW are proposing to spend €45,000 on the property.
“Once conservation works have been completed, the plan is to open the writer’s home to the 10,000 visitors who visit the Blasket Islands each year.
“Tomas O’Criomhthain’s house is a valuable cultural resource for Great Blasket Island and I look forward to the completion of the works.”
