Urgent action required after confirmation that €23m in damage caused to Clare coastline – Conway

Fine Gael Clare Senator, Martin Conway, has today (Friday) reiterated his call for an urgent response to the unprecedented damage caused to coastal communities around the country. His comments come after Clare County Council estimated that in excess of €23 million euro worth of damage has been caused to the Clare coastline by the recent bad weather.

“For the first time we now have an initial figure quantifying the amount of damage which was caused to the Clare coastline and I am urging the Government to outline how it plans to deal with the damage.

“It is critical at this point that a clear strategy is formulated so our communities will know when they can expect the repairs and remedial work to be carried out.   People need reassurance regarding when the necessary works will be done so that their lives can be returned to normal.

“With this in mind, I believe it is critical that the Government initiate urgent discussions with our partners in Europe regarding possible funding from the European Solidarity Fund so that an application to the fund can be fast-tracked.”
