Statement by Minister Shatter following the death of Mrs. Christine Buckley

Alan Shatter TD, Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, has paid tribute to Mrs. Christine Buckley who today passed away following a long illness.

Minister Shatter stated: “Through her courage and bravery Christine Buckley made a most important contribution to Irish society. By telling her story about institutional abuse, she lifted a veil on the horrors of childhood experiences in the Ireland of the past. Her campaign for truth opened the door for other survivors of abuse to come forward with their own stories.”

“I believe the work and dedication of Christine Buckley was pivotal in changing Irish perceptions of institutional abuse and led to a new era of child protection in this State.”

“I want to express my condolences to the family and friends of Mrs. Buckley, and to the staff and supporters of the Aislinn Centre which was established by Mrs. Buckley and which continues to provide supports to survivors of institutional abuse and their families.”
