Over €9,000 towards sport and activity for older people in Meath – Butler

4th December 2014 - Aoife Carragher

“A range of activities will be open to older people in Meath after €9,670 was allocated to local organisations” said Fine Gael TD for Meath West Ray Butler, after the Minister for Sport, Michael Ring TD today awarded funding under the National Grant Scheme for Sport and Physical Activity for Older People 2014.

“The National Grant Scheme is a joint initiative between Age and Opportunity’s Go for Life programme and the Irish Sports Council.  It funds groups and clubs who cater for older people around the country so that they can buy equipment, run sports events or try new activities.

“In Meath 35 clubs and organisations were awarded €9,670 to help increase the participation of older people in recreational sport and physical activity.

“It is extremely important that outlets are open to older people so they can socialise in the community and to allow them to stay fit and active. Exercise and mental health go hand in hand, older people who are active, feel better in mind and body.

“This funding will make it possible for local clubs and organisations to enhance existing opportunities for their members in recreational sport and physical activity. It will also encourage them to come up with new initiatives geared at involving older people.

“I would encourage older people in Meath to find out about sporting activities in your community and to find out how to get involved.”
