Noone calls on TDs and Senators to take up the 10,000 steps a day challenge

24th June 2014 - Sarah Meade

Fine Gael Dublin Senator, Catherine Noone, has today (Tuesday) called on TDs and Senators to take up the challenge to walk 10,000 steps per day over the summer. Senator was speaking at the launch of the annual Oireachtas walk, organised by her colleague, Minister Jimmy Deenihan.

“Research shows that walking 10,000 steps a day can have a really positive impact on your health. Politicians should lead by example, and considering summer is well and truly upon us, I am calling on TDs and Senators to take up the challenge to walk 10,000 steps a day.

“In politics, we often talk the talk, now it’s time to walk the walk. Fitness experts say walking 10,000 steps a day is enough to maintain a healthy weight. Setting a target is also hugely motivating, and it’s a great way for us all to keep in step with how much we are exercising.

“Walking 10,000 steps a day can sound daunting but, when you break it down over the course of a day, it’s very achievable. It could mean an extra walk to the shops, or taking the stairs, or a walk at lunchtime.

“Getting a pedometer is a great way to keep track of how much exercise you are getting. They can be bought for under €10, and I find that wearing one throughout the day gives me great motivation to get out and about. Some smartphones come with a pedometer pre-installed, so many people may already have a pedometer without realising it.

“The Irish Heart Foundation recommends 10,000 steps a day as part of their five week step challenge. B eing active is hugely important for heart health, reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke. Adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity, such as brisk walking, five days a week to keep their heart healthy.

“So I am calling on my colleagues in Leinster House to take up the challenge to set a good example for the public to stay active and keep healthy.”
