Minister Flanagan to discuss Ukraine and Gaza with EU Foreign Ministers
22nd July 2014 - Charles Flanagan TD
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, TD, is meeting EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels today to discuss the crash of flight MH17 in Ukraine and the current crisis in Gaza.
Speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, Minister Flanagan said:
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of all the victims of flight MH17, who have suffered such a sudden and devastating loss.
“In my discussions with EU Foreign Ministers today, I will support calls for a full investigation to ensure that those responsible for this tragic incident are brought to justice. It is absolutely imperative that all sides involved in the conflict in Ukraine work together to ensure that the bereaved families get the answers they need.
“I remain very concerned about the on-going security and humanitarian situation in eastern Ukraine. This incident shows why it is so urgent to bring this conflict to an end.”
Ministers will also discuss the current crisis in Gaza. Minister Flanagan said:
“The appalling violence now being witnessed in Gaza and Israel is absolutely unacceptable. It is incumbent on all sides to agree an immediate ceasefire. All Palestinians and Israelis have the right to live in peace and security and without the threat of indiscriminate violence.”
The major escalation in violence has had a devastating effect on the civilian population in Gaza. Yesterday I announced €500,000 in funding to support the United Nation’s Emergency Flash Appeal. This funding will help the UN to meet families’ urgent need for shelter, food and medical aid. This funding is in addition to Ireland’s broader programme of assistance to the Palestinian people, which amounts to over €10 million annually.”
