Minister Flanagan statement on the passing of Albert Reynolds

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan, TD, has expressed his condolences on the death of former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds.

Speaking this morning, Minister Flanagan said:

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of the former Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds. My thoughts are with his wife Kathleen and family at this sad time.

“Albert Reynolds will be particularly remembered for his outstanding contribution to the Northern Ireland Peace Process.

“He took risks for peace and his courageous and single minded negotiation, with then British Prime Minister John Major, of the Downing Street Declaration in December 1993, was a remarkable achievement.

“This in turn facilitated the development of an inclusive peace process which ultimately led to the achievement of the Good Friday Agreement in April 1998.

“The positive legacy of Albert Reynolds’ leadership will best be honoured by continuing his courageous work to secure an Ireland that is fully at peace and where all traditions are recognised.

“Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.”
