Increase in funding a recognition of carers -Byrne

23rd October 2014 - Fine Gael Press Office

Fine Gael Dublin South Central TD, Catherine Byrne, has today (Wednesday) said that it is crucial for the State to provide support to carers and welcomed the fact that an estimated €806 million is being spent on carers in 2014.

“It is absolutely crucial that the State provides support to carers and in this regard, I welcome the fact that an estimated €806 million is being spent on carers in 2014. Considering the figure was at €752 million in 2010, this represents an increase of €53.9 million or 7.2%.

“Carers are the backbone of this country, looking after sick and vulnerable people. I know first-hand the great work they do in my own community of Inchicore and across Ireland. We must ensure they know how much they are appreciated, not only for the good they do in their families and communities, but also because their work saves taxpayers money, keeping people out of hospitals and nursing homes and in their own homes.

“In 2014 the funding for carers breaks down as follows: €557 million on Carers’ Allowance; €21.5 million on Carers’ Benefit; €122 million on the Respite Care Grant; and €105 million on Domiciliary Care Allowance. These supports are so important to carers in allowing them to do the valuable work they do.

“The funding is also crucial in allowing carers to care for themselves and ensure their own wellbeing does not suffer as a result of their difficult work. This is where the Respite Care Grant comes in, and I am glad to say that the number of Respite Care Grants issued has increased by almost 18% over the last four years.

“At €1,375, the Respite Care Grant is more than twice what it was in 2002 when it was €635, and higher than it was in 2006 at the height of the economic boom, when it was €1,200. This type of payment, in the form of a non-means tested lump sum is not available for any other group, nor is there an equivalent payment for carers in any other country in Europe. It is a clear sign of our commitment to carers in Ireland and is deserved recognition of the valuable work they do. I will continue to advocate for continued supports for carers and to ensure that the various allowances and benefits for carers are maintained.”
