Immediate dialogue must be pursued to resolve Liebherr dispute – Coghlan

5th January 2014 - Sarah Meade

Fine Gael Kerry Senator and Seanad Chief Whip, Paul Coghlan, has today (Wednesday) appealed to both sides involved in the Liebherr dispute to engage in immediate dialogue. Senator Coghlan was speaking during Order of Business in the Seanad this afternoon.

“I would urge both management and unions at Liebherr to take on board the statement from the Minister for Jobs, Richard Bruton TD, when he pointed out that all of the industrial mechanisms of the State are available to resolve this dispute.

“It would be a terrible shame to see anything negative happen to the Liebherr plant, which is one of the longest operating multinationals in Ireland. I would like to see every effort made to safeguard the jobs of the 670 strong workforce.

“Liebherr Ireland Ltd has been in Killarney since 1958 and the company has enjoyed great expansion and success over those years. Any downgrading of the facility would be a major blow to the local community.

“Immediate and meaningful dialogue is the only way to ensure a satisfactory resolution.”
