Hayes welcomes election of Juncker
5th July 2014 - Sarah Meade
Brian Hayes, Fine Gael MEP for Dublin, has welcomed today’s election of Jean-Claude Juncker as the new President of the European Commission.
Speaking in Strasbourg, Minister Hayes said: ‘Europe badly needs a fresh start and the creation, once again, of the social market economy. President Juncker comes from a small country and fully understands the interests of other small countries. The one institution that gives practical effect to the defence of small countries is the European Commission. In my conversation with President Juncker last week, I stressed the importance of helping Ireland to make a full recovery’.
“His priorities set out to the European Parliament today are clear and point in the direction of Europe-wide growth and recovery. That task can only be made possible if all of the Institutions deliver on their responsibilities.
“Jobs, Stability and Growth – that must be Europe’s agenda over the next five years. His plans to complete the Internal Markets, scrap roaming charges, one digital market, new lending and delivering the enterprise agenda are fresh and clear.
“Ireland has achieved a lot since joining the EU. Our recovery is dependent on what happens in the newly configured institutions – which must be made fit for purpose. President Junker must now deliver the Europe that its citizens so badly want.”
Mr Juncker received the backing of MEPs during a vote in Strasbourg today (Tuesday).
